William Lee - Chainsaw Carver
Will's Chainsaw Sculptures is located in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
Although I live in Hemel, I carve on a private site in Chandlers Cross, in beautiful woodlands.
I am a full time carver.
I enjoy living and working in the natural environment and i believe in preserving
as many trees as possible. Therefore, I only use local timber which has fallen
or been felled for safety reasons. I work with a wide variety of different woods and
am happy the carve 'in situ' if necessary.
I started work as an Arborist four years ago and as soon as I gained my chainsaw licence, I
started to experiment with carving. I am entirely self taught. My first carving was a bear and
bears still form the bulk of my work, although my style has progressed and refined over the
years. I have carved a wide variety of subjects, from birds, to dogs, horses, mythical creatures,
green men, figures and benches.
I am often commissioned to do work on free-standing wood and to tree stumps in situ. I can work from
photographs or pictures of the required subject. I have completed comissions for projects as diverse
as a seven foot Moon Goddess from a stump in a private garden, to a 30 foot totem pole. I am invited
to attend many agricultural and woodcraft shows in both the UK and the US.
Although Chainsaw Carving is a relatively new art in this country, it is a big business
in America and in Februray each year; I attend a large gathering of over 200 international
carvers at the Ridgeway Rendezvous in Pennsylvania. This keeps me in contact with the other
fantastic carvers from all over the globe and is a source of great inspiration.
