Chainsaw Carving is a skill, which has been popular in America for a long time
but is now growing in the UK. There are now quite a few full time woodcarvers
up and down the country and many practice the skill in their free time. Most
chainsaw carvers come from a background in the forestry or tree surgery
business, where they have become accustomed to handling a chainsaw and have the
necessary chainsaw licence, safety licence, safety clothing and equipment, as
well as the transport to move large logs of wood.
I use a chainsaw for the entire process of carving, from the roughing out, down
to the fine detail. I sometimes use a power sander if necessary and will finish
the piece as the client has requested - either natural, painted, waxed or stained.
